A useful way to understand the purpose of a fire damper is to visualise it as a castle gate. When all is well within the castle or building, the gate remains open to allow air to flow throughout it. If a fire is detected, the damper slams shut, preventing the spread of the flames.

The way by which a fire damper ‘detects’ a fire can vary depending on which type of damper it is. Fusible link fire dampers operate mechanically, whilst electronic fire dampers are controlled by control panels that act alongside the rest of the buildings fire protection systems.

Despite their critical role in combatting fires, fire dampers are often unseen, hidden away in ceilings and fire walls. Fire dampers come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, but the most common types are presented below.

The testing of fire dampers is a legal requirement. By law, fire dampers must be tested by a qualified technician at least once a year. Larger buildings however require two yearly visits. 

If you are unsure, we recommend getting in touch with an expert who can assist you. 

Smaller buildings may often only need a day or so for a team of engineers to comprehensively inspect all the fire dampers. Like the cost of a project however, the time needed for an inspection is subject to many variables which need to be considered by a qualified operations manager.
